The S55 engine has a weak link which can destroy the engine if it fails.
The weak link on the S55 engine is the crankhub with the 2 sprockets which is mounted on the crankshaft which, among others is connected to the camshafts with a chain.
From the factory, the hub on the crankshaft and the 2 sprockets consist of 3 parts that are pressed together, over time the sprockets can suddenly loosen, and the engine will be out of timing which will make the pistons and valves hit each other (typically the intake valves will bent) and the engine breaks down. If you are lucky the engine can be repaired but it is very expensive, if you are unlucky you will need a new engine.
The spooky thing about this error is that you do not get any warning before the damage suddenly happens, there is no prior noise or other indication that something is wrong. In addition to this, it can happen on all models, years and millage and both on tuned and standard engines (however, the risk is bigger with the tuned cars).
Gintani has developed a crank hub including both sprockets which are manufactured in one piece so that it cannot possibly come apart. So if you have a BMW F80 M3/F32+33 M4/F87+LCI M2 with the S55 engine then we strongly recommend that you get the original 3 piece crank hub with the 2 sprockets replaced with a Gintani crank hub with sprockets in one piece although it is a big job that takes a total of about 3 full days to complete including testing and checking.
